Belle Glade, FL – At its annual meeting on May 13th, the Health Care District of Palm Beach County’s Board of Commissioners elected its new Board Chair and officers. In a unanimous vote, the Board elected its Vice Chair, Philip H. Ward, III, to serve as Chair of the volunteer Health Care District Board, along with Brian R. Lohmann as the new Vice Chair and Nancy C. Banner, Esq. as Secretary. Mr. Ward was appointed to the Health Care District Board by Florida Governor Rick Scott in October 2011. He also serves on the District’s Finance Committee.

“It is an honor to serve as Chair of the Health Care District Board,” said Mr. Ward. “At a time of great change in health care in Florida and across the country, I take pride in the safety-net programs that the Health Care District provides to keep our community healthy.”

Mr. Ward is president and managing partner of Ward Damon, a multi-disciplined law firm which he co-founded in 1987. From 1980 to 1984, he served as legislative counsel and assistant to United States Senator Warren B. Rudman of New Hampshire. He is a member and former chairman of the Palm Beach Business Development Board and the InternetCoast Tri-County Economic Development Council, former director of The Forum Club of Palm Beach County, as well as the Economic Council of Palm Beach County. Mr. Ward is also a member of the Board of Trustees of BIZPAC.

Mr. Ward succeeds Carol A. Roberts as Board Chair. Ms. Roberts, a former Palm Beach County Commissioner, was appointed to the Health Care District Board by the Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners in 2008 and then reappointed in 2012 for a second four-year term. Also serving on the seven-member Board are Alina M. Alonso, MD, Director of the Florida Department of Health Palm Beach County, Leslie B. Daniels and Angeleta Gray, former Delray Beach City Commissioner.

The annual Board meeting was held in Belle Glade at Lakeside Medical Center, the Health Care District’s 70-bed, acute care hospital accredited by The Joint Commission that serves the Glades communities. Among the dignitaries who attended the meeting were: Shreya Kuntawala, Chief Legislative Assistant to Florida Senator Joseph Abruzzo; Barbara Davis, Aide to Florida Rep. Kevin Rader; Lisa Wilson, Commission Secretary to County Commissioner District 6 Melissa McKinlay; Chandler Williamson, City Manager, City of Pahokee; Luke Jackson, Vice President, The Glades Region, Business Development Board; David Goodlett, Senior Vice President of Government and Grower Relations of Sugar Cane Growers Cooperative of Florida and former Chair of the Health Care District Board; Capt. Ed Luty, Commanding Officer for the Glades, Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office; and Brenda Bunting, Executive Director, Belle Glade Chamber of Commerce.Also in attendance were members of the Glades Rural Area Support Board, including Donia Roberts, Esq., Vice Chair; Mary Weeks, RN, Secretary; Alina M. Alonso, MD; Sandra Chamblee; and Rev. Robert Rease.
